Jessamine WWII Veteran Presented With Flag Flown Over U.S. Capitol Building

Jessamine County

WASHINGTON (July 8, 2011)—On Sunday at the Crosswoods Baptist Church on Harrodsburg Road, Congressman Ben Chandler and his wife, Jennifer Chandler presented a flag to Creed Johns, a veteran of WWII.  The flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol building in his honor.

During Johns’ service in the 45th Infantry Division, he served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany in WWII. While dealing with the loss of his brother in WWII, Johns’ valor during his service awarded him the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Victory in WWII Medal, the European, Africa, and Middle East Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

“The Fourth of July is a time to reflect on and thank our women and men in uniform, like Mr. Johns, who have done so much for our country,” Chandler said.  “Our nation’s veterans answered the call to serve, sacrificing so much to protect our homeland and our way of life.  Brave women and men like Mr. Johns put their lives on the line so that we could remain free. This flag is just a small token of our appreciation—thank you for your service.”

After the event, the Crosswoods Baptist Church invited all the attendees to stay for an informal picnic in honor of all veterans of the community, especially Mr. Johns and his family. The church also began work on a veteran’s wall in tribute to their service for Independence Day.

Johns is a local farmer in Jessamine County, known for driving his antique tractors in the community’s parades. Mr. Johns and Mrs. Susan Johns have three children who were in attendance at the presentation.
