Lexington Student's Art to be Displayed in U.S. Capitol

Chandler presents Armand Napier of Lafayette HS with art award

2011 Congressional Art Competition


WASHINGTON (May 26, 2011) – Congressman Ben Chandler announced Armand Napier as the overall winner of the 2011 Congressional Art Competition.  Napier won first place in Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District with his pastel drawing entitled “Granddaddy Don’s Farm.”   Napier’s artwork will be displayed inside the United States Capitol building for one year. 

“As I welcome visitors to DC and meet with the people I represent, it is amazing to see the work of a young Central Kentucky artist on display in the halls of the U.S. Capitol--I take great pride in pointing it out,” Chandler said. “Congratulations to Mr. Napier and to all of our winners this year. I hope all of you continue to pursue your passion for art in the future.”

The 2011 overall runner up is Rachael Nicole Hall of Garrard County High School for her painting entitled “Japanese Flow.”

Other participants receiving awards include:

  • Avery Durbin, of Lafayette High School, won the award for best artwork in Fayette County with the piece entitled “Roots of Tomorrow.”
  • Gabe Adkins, of Lafayette High School, won the district award for best computer generated artwork with the piece entitled “Spiraling Freedom.”
  • Lauren Elizabeth Perkins, of Lafayette High School, won the district award for best artwork in the collage category for the piece entitled “A Sense of Adventure.”
  • Austin Cadle, of Lafayette High School, won the district award in the prints category for the piece “Death is the Tyrant of Imagination.”
  • Joseph Wrightson, of Lafayette High School, won the district award for best artwork in the mixed media category for the piece entitled “Mozaika Paradiso.”
  • Jesi Hoelzer, of Bryan Station High School, won the district award for best artwork in the paintings category for the piece entitled “She’s Still Alive.”
  • Matt Hartley, of Anderson County High School, won the award for best artwork in Anderson County for the piece entitled “Dog of Many Colors”
  • Breanna Thomas, of Garrard County High School, won the award for best artwork in Garrard County for her untitled piece
  • Lyndsey Johnson, of Madison Southern High School, won the award for best artwork in Madison County for the piece entitled “Bad Hair Day”
  • Katie Hoover, of Paris High School, won the district award for photography for the photograph entitled “A Day In My Shoes”
  • K. Brooke Williamson, of Scott County High School, won the award for best artwork in Scott County for the piece entitled “The Quarter Horse”
  • Verena Burger, of West Jessamine High School, won the award for best artwork in Jessamine County for the piece entitled “Zusammen”
  • Catherine Graham, of West Jessamine High School, won the district award for best drawing for the piece entitled “Reflections”
  • Ivana Sudduth, of Western Hills High School, won the award for best Franklin County artwork for her untitled artwork.
  • Adam Miller, of Woodford County High School, won the award for best Woodford County artwork for the piece entitled “Rebirth”

Created in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition is an annual competition where the artwork of high school students is judged at the congressional district level.  In addition to an overall district winner, a winner is chosen from each county and in each of the seven categories which includes painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, computer generated art, and photography.
