Chandler Responds to NTSB Findings

WASHINGTON (July 26, 2007) –The following is a statement from Congressman Ben Chandler in response to the National Transportation Safety Board’s findings on the cause of the Comair Flight 5191 crash.

“After many months of investigation, the NTSB released its findings today on the cause of the Comair Flight 5191 crash—a tragedy that was felt throughout Central Kentucky and beyond.  The individuals who lost their lives in this horrible accident were mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, and their loss is immeasurable.

“Throughout the past 11 months, the NTSB has conducted their investigation with diligence and professionalism, and I commend them for their efforts and their service to the American public.  The NTSB’s determination was that significant human error was the probable cause of the crash, and it is my hope that the hard work of the NTSB will lead to real changes in aviation safety in our country.

“Of particular interest to me are the additional safety recommendations that the NTSB presented as a direct result of their investigation.  Included in their safety recommendations were five previous recommendations that the Federal Aviation Administration has yet to adequately address.  This is no surprise to me, as the FAA has consistently been unsuccessful in meeting safety priorities recommended by the NTSB.  As we move forward from the NTSB’s investigation, I will continue to press the FAA to promptly implement these recommendations and require mandatory compliance.

“I hope the NTSB’s final report helps to bring some answers to the community and to the families who have suffered so greatly as a result of this tragedy.”
