Chandler makes presentation at Lexington Catholic High School

WASHINGTON (May 1, 2007) Congressman Ben Chandler was at Lexington Catholic High School on Monday, April 30th to present a certificate of recognition to Scott Collard, son of Mark and Debbie Collard of Lexington, for his appointment to the United States Naval Academy.  After Chandler’s congressional nomination, Collard received an appointment.

“The United States Naval Academy is an outstanding educational institution where the best of this country go to prepare for a career in military service,” said Chandler.  “This appointment is a tremendous opportunity for this young man, and I applaud his efforts and wish him much success.”

It is no easy feat to receive an appointment to a U.S. service academy.  Students must have an excellent academic record, participate in extracurricular activities and be in top physical condition.  Collard not only endured a rigorous application process with the Service Academy, but participated in Congressman Chandler’s review process, which includes a final interview by a panel made up of former academy graduates and current or retired officers.

“The service academies offer an outstanding education, leadership training, physical, and character development,” said Collard.  “I want to be immersed in this type of environment to discover and reach my full potential.”  Collard, with a 3.85 GPA, plays soccer for Lexington Catholic and has been a member of the Lexington Futbol Club Premier Team for the past three years.

Collard is involved in many extracurricular activities, including the Spanish Honor Society, Beta Club, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Student Council.  He is also an Eagle Scout and is a member of the youth council at St. Peter Church.
