WASHINGTON (May 24, 2007) – Yesterday, Congressman Chandler offered an amendment to the Interior and Environment appropriations bill which would increase funding for State Historic Preservation Offices by $5 million in fiscal year 2008. The amendment was agreed upon by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and the Environment.
“The State Historic Preservation Offices are the backbone of our country’s historic preservation program,” said Congressman Ben Chandler. “They are the first point of contact that individuals, local governments, non-profits and federal and state agencies go to with questions regarding historic preservation and resources. The work that these offices undertake preserves and protects our national heritage and contributes to the country’s economic and cultural vitality.”
Administered through the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund, the State Historic Preservation Offices restore and preserve historic buildings, sites and objects. The draft Interior and Environment appropriations bill included $40 million for State Historic Preservation Offices. Congressman Chandler’s amendment increased this amount to $45 million. The bill now proceeds to the full Appropriations Committee.
“I believe it is crucial that we preserve and enhance our country's irreplaceable historic heritage as a matter of public interest,” said Chandler. “Through these efforts, a legacy of cultural, educational, economic, social and environmental benefits will be maintained and enriched for present and future generations.”
Congressman Chandler is a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and the Environment, which has funding authority over the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund. He is also a member of the Congressional Historic Preservation Caucus.
